Online Chatter on Philippine Typhoon Ondoy, part two

Share This Post: monitoring chatter on Facebook once more, through my friends’ and contacts’ status updates, with Renzie Baluyut.

For a list of rescue hotlines, links and resources, please click this link.

Help out the victims of Typhoon Ondoy /Kestsana.  Click on this link to find out how you can help today.

A couple of days back, I posted a transcript of sorts- a compilation of status updates on Facebook as my friends, colleagues and contacts sent out all kinds of messages related to the Typhoon Ondoy / International Storm Ketsana rescue and relief efforts.

It had been three days since Typhoon Ondoy / International Storm Ketsana had hit the Philippines.  This was the worst incident of flooding seen by Metro Manila in 42 years.  More than a month’s worth of rain crashed down on the city in just a relatively short span of 12 hours.

The damage was so bad- mainly because everyone was caught completely unaware, thinking it was just another rainy weekend.

Drainage in Metro Manila had already been terribly neglected to begin with- in fact, certain areas were already generally expected to flood up, even with the most regular of rainy days.

But with the sheer volume of rainwater, areas that never used to flood up at all suddenly found themselves sinking fast, as all that rain just kept pouring in at an alarming rate.  By mid-afternoon, 80% of Metro Manila was submerged in murky floodwater.

More pictures of the September 26 flooding can be seen here on a previous post of mine.

Photo taken by JM Rodriguez. Entire neighborhoods were submerged in water; as the flood recedes, mud-soaked furniture, vehicles and belongings are strewn all about the streets, mingling with garbage, and even the carcasses of animals and livestock and the decaying bodies of those who didn't make it through the weekend.

As of this writing, there are at least 240 dead, some 100,000 displaced, and at least 2 million people affected across 25 provinces, including Metro Manila and Rizal.

Relief and rescue operations have been going on for a couple of days now.  For Filipinos like myself who find themselves online the entire time, Facebook had been a steady stream of information as stories of selflessness and heroism, and all sorts of pictures and video have been coming in.

Here’s a compilation of status updates I got from some of my friends and colleagues- these were little messages taken from a 12-hour period, between 3PM of Sept 29 (Tuesday) to about 3AM the next day (Wednesday, Sept 30).

Despite stories of opportunists, looters, corruption, politicking, grandstanding, and even rumors of crocodiles lurking in the floodwaters, what I find heartwarming is the fact that ordinary Filipinos have banded together to aid in rescue and relief operations, passing on information and updates, giving (and doing) what they can, and encouraging so many more to join in.

Even those who have been hard hit are reaching out to those who have been hit even harder.

And so, the cleaning up and the rebuilding goes on.  Hopefully, this post gives you a better idea of what’s been going on in the Philippines through the messages of various people all over Metro Manila as they help out with the the survivors of Typhoon Ondoy / International Storm Ketsana.

Suggestion: 1 egg costs PhP 2.50 and banana (saba) costs PhP 1.75 each. At PhP2,500, you can buy 1,000 raw eggs or 1,400 pcs. of banana. Take them to Enderun so they can boil these there for distribution! Boiled egg is a good source of protein and banana is good for potassium and to combat dehydration and diarrhea..plus, it’s biodegradable.

Enderun Culinary school has produced over 5200 meals since yestrday. They need more goods. People are counting on them. Pls donate canned goods, instant noodles, crackers, biscuits, milk in tetra packs. They accept raw food too & rice. thinks there should be a special place in hell for those who extort during a crisis. Its bad enough a Merville guard would ask for money to let vehicles pass that were delivering relief goods, its even worse that a board member of the village would refuse to do anything about it when my wife reported it. Instead, she ends up getting yelled at.

From Raffy Barreiro:
The government and the private sector with security agencies can help prevent looting in severely hit areas! Please help! Village security and the Home Owners Associations should step up!

From Marizel M. Sarangelo:
Nobody would have predicted the devastation brought about by Ondoy. Even our town here up north perched on one of the highest parts of the city wasn’t spared. Houses near the creek were devastated by two-storey high flood waters last saturday and the onslaught reached all the way down the far stretches of the creek. Families were displaced, pets were lost or worse yet dead due to drowning and a number of families lost their love ones who were carried by the fast rising water along the muddy banks.  all relief efforts have been handed to our captain jose arnel quebal and private residents around the area. Still, more help is needed and it seems that what we do and what we have is never enough. But we soldier on, hand in hand we shall overcome.

Humanity Beyond 140 Characters

I have been on Twitter for about 6 months. I have been Facebook for about 3 years.
Overall, it has been a good experience. These are ways to keep up with old friend, make new friends, and gain more, hopefully good, information.

During this time I have also heard a number of critieques of social media.  Some warn that things like Facebook and Twitter will make our society impersonal, shallow and hostile.  Some believe that social media can de-humanize us.

My experience and observations lead me to believe that those dangers can and do happen, but they do not have to happen. We can take precautions to avoid these pitfalls.

Two Rules to Maintain Humanity beyond 140 Characters

RULE 1 – When reading tweets and status updates, remember that the other person is far more than what is communicated in their 140 characters. The reality is that most of people tweet, re-tweet, and post without a lot of thought. Our true humanity goes far beyond what we post on social media.

I have a number of people whom I was friends with before we became Facebook “friends.” If you compared my tweets and status updates which those of some of my friends, you would never put us together. However, our common bonds of friendship and humanity are far deeper than our tweets. If you read a post that upsets you,  keep in mind that a tweets does not capture the full person.

RULE 2 – When tweeting or posting your status, remember that most people will not follow Rule 1. Most of us have a number of “friends” and “followers” who we do not see on a regular basis. While that is part of the beauty of social media, it is also one of the dangers.

Remember that many people on line only know you by what you tweet and post. That means that if you only post about how sad you are,  how evil a political party is, or what products people should buy, then you will be reduced in the minds of many to only those things. Take a moment and think about what your tweets and posts communicate.

So go ahead - tweet and post away, but always keep in mind that your humanity and the humanity of those who you follow goes far beyond 140 characters.

Social Media capital?

Although our distinguished title of  “texting capital of the world” has been challenged in recent years, it has long been accepted that Filipinos have a penchant for utilizing our mobile phones for sending off SMS (Short Messaging Service). Every Juan and Maria in our overpopulated streets can be seen holding the ubiquitous cell phone, typing while walking or talking with a friend or constantly checking whether the beep they just heard came from that tiny tech device so easily stored in our pockets.

In more recent times, we have also seen another global phenomenon making its way to our shores — Social Media. And being such easy adopters, we have seen the rise of users — from the tech savvy bloggers to the ordinary housewife to even our household help. Everyone has a Facebook account, a Multiply account, perhaps a Flickr or Youtube, a Twitter or a Plurk… and yes, even Friendster is alive and well (though some would disagree). It’s not an uncommon phenomenon nowadays to hear the phrase “add me up in Facebook” or “i-Friendster mo ako.” Some would even go as far as to say that the social networks have now replaced the most commonly used form of communication (as opposed to text messaging).

Would I go as far as saying that the Philippines has become the social media capital of the world? Probably not. But, we could be heading in that direction. In the recent Wave 4 study done by Universal McCann, these are some internet usage stats that were discovered:

  • 67.51% of online Pinoys have uploaded videos to a video sharing site
  • while 98.1% have watched videos online

… and more stats from the Wave 3 study:

  • 83% of online Filipinos are part of a social network
  • 86.4% have uploaded photos
  • 90% of online Pinoys have read a blog

Along with the rise in popularity of Microblogging in the Philippines, I will place my money on Social Media to be around for quite some time. And just today, I came across this article. Needless to say, we have learned to utilize the internet and a lot of its offerings — for the mundane to the life-changing. And in the coming years, I can only see our usage of these new mediums to increase, as we find more and more ways to connect, share and let people know what we are up to. Social media capital? Not just yet.

But in the meantime, i-Facebook niyo ako.

How To Integrate Facebook With WordPress

Facebook is one of those Web phenomena that impress everyone with numbers. To cite some: about 250 million users are on Facebook, and together they spend more than 5 billion minutes on Facebook… every day. These numbers suggest that we should start thinking about how to use Facebook for blogging or vice versa.

We did some research to find out how the integration of Facebook with WordPress and vice versa works, or — in other words — how you can present your WordPress blog on Facebook or use the functionality of Facebook on your WordPress-powered blog. Both of these can be achieved with a set of WordPress plug-ins, a couple of which we’ll present here in detail.
1. Integrating A WordPress Blog Into Facebook

Integrating a WordPress blog into Facebook is actually quite simply achieved via the Facebook API. The Facebook API makes programming applications that can be spread via Facebook almost a piece of cake. A lot of interactive browser games are on Facebook, such as the currently popular “Mafia Wars.” This game allows users to start a mafia family with their friends, with the goal of becoming an important figure in the virtual underground crime scene. To start a clan, you invite other friends on the network to join. This is the growth strategy of any application on Facebook: the simple snowball effect.

The applications sustain themselves through earnings generated by displaying advertisements, which also makes Facebook an even more attractive platform to develop on. This symbiosis generates growth for both Facebook and its applications.
Plug-In Installation and Configuration

John Eckman developed the WordPress plug-in Wordbook in early 2009. This plug-in allows WordPress blog owners to integrate their blog in Facebook. This gives a blog two lives: one as an application on Facebook (such as, for example, my private FreigeistBlog) and one at the original URL (http://freigeist.devmag.net).

To access a blog via Facebook, you need to first grant access to the application. To do this, go to the so-called “canvas” page, which is where the Facebook twin of the blog lives (my example). However, granting access to the blog’s application means that the administrator of the blog also has access to information about you as a user (this is what most applications aim for: information such as date of birth, gender and educational status allows them to display quite targeted ads).

The application we’re dealing with is a simple blog and, in this sense, quite innocent, but we should state outright that the Facebook API as it is now treats blogs and websites as applications, which may not be appropriate, given the issue mentioned above. Facebook users who authorize the blog application can now easly send comments and share posts from within Facebook. The data, however, is still stored in the original database on the server where the blog is installed.

This makes it look as though Facebook serves merely as a simple feed reader. Yet, we get some other benefits. The blog on Facebook can be used to create a community around it by taking advantage of Facebook’s snowball effect, because friends of the blog’s users will see in their activity stream that they have been participating on the blog. Furthermore, it means that Facebook users will see new posts from your blog whenever they sign in to Facebook and can easily follow comments, making your blog more accessible.

To create a Facebook twin of your blog, first you have to set up a new application. To do this, you need a Facebook account and have to register as a developer using the preceding link. All of this can be done in a few minutes.

Create a new Facebook application

Once you have agreed to the terms of use, give your application a name. Then you will receive your API key and a secret, which you will need later.

Settings for the Facebook application. Large view.

Then, you have to submit a so-called “post-authorize callback URL.” This is the address on your server to which Facebook will send a notice whenever a user authorizes access to the application. By the same logic, there is also the “post-remove callback URL,” which receives a notice when a user removes the application. Both of these events are handled by the Wordbook plug-in. You merely need to write the address of the blog’s root directory with a trailing slash.

Facebook application settings: Define callback URLs. Large view.

The third step is to claim your canvas page, which is the page through which a Facebook user accesses your blog, and a canvas callback URL, which is the page from which content is retrieved. Again, include a trailing slash, or else internal links on your blog won’t work with their Facebook twin.

Facebook application settings: Define canvas page. Large view.
Now you have some choices to make, namely, how to set up your canvas page. You have a choice between iFrame and FBML. FBML is a Facebook XML scheme with which you can use specific Facebook tags (such as tags to display user profiles). You can also use it to access certain Facebook procedures. However, the Wordbook plug-in works with iFrames, which allow Javascript and other tags, and which FBML does not support.

To distinguish between them rather crudely, you can say that iFrames give the developer more flexibility but, unlike FBML, restrict access to Facebook procedures. Another advantage of iFrames is that code that Facebook retrieves from the canvas callback URL need not be parsed by the FBML parser, which could yield a performance gain. With iFrames, only internal links on the blog need to be adjusted. And the “resizeable” option allows Facebook’s JavaScript code to adjust the size of the iFrame to Facebook’s layout.

Now the hard work is done. All that’s left is to install the Wordbook plug-in using the standard WordPress method: install and activate. Then you can change the plug-in’s settings on the settings panel, and here you will need your application ID and the secret. You also have to tell the plug-in where the canvas page is located, so that internal links can be adjusted.

Adjusting the settings of the Wordbook plug-in

And that’s it! If you want, you could activate or deactivate some other options, such as the commenting function and whether users can add your application to their profile by displaying the latest posts from your blog in their profile.

Browsing through the blog via Facebook. Large view.

The plug-in allows you to play around a little bit. But as we said, you are somewhat limited in how fully you can integrate your blog into the Facebook canvas. But the next plug-in we’ll look at integrates a bit of Facebook into your blog.

2. Integrating Facebook In A WordPress Blog

To begin, a little history lesson is needed. Many users do not like having to register for each blog where they would like to post comments, especially if they already have accounts on so many other social networks, such as Facebook and MySpace. So a single online ID for several purposes would be ideal, wouldn’t it? That’s the idea behind the OpenID protocol, which started in 2005. It decentralizes the identification of users for various providers and services. In essence, you can create an account on Facebook and connect it to services such as MySpace or even a personal blog. If you want to change your profile for all of these services, that too is decentralized: you simply change the settings on your Facebook account. OpenID is a chance to make the Web and its services more easily accessible. There are reasonable risks and concerns involved, but also many opportunities.

Facebook announced in 2007 that it would implement OpenID, and others followed, which explains why we now find more and more buttons that say “Connect with Facebook” or “Google Friend Connect.” This leads us to our second plug-in, Facebook Connect WordPress plug-in, which almost seamlessly integrates Facebook into your blog.

The plug-in allows users to comment on a blog using their Facebook account; and if they are already signed in or on Facebook, they need not sign in again. Users do not have to register for a unique account on the blog because the plug-in retrieves the user’s information directly from the Facebook API. With access to the user profiles on Facebook, you can display your users’ profile pictures, which adds a personal touch to your blog.

The plug-in integrates a lot of Facebook functions: for example, users can send invitations and share stories and comments on Facebook, which gives your blog the benefit of word-of-mouth marketing. To do this, you need to activate the plug-in option that publishes a user’s activity in their respective activity feed. Last but not least, you can enable a gadget that displays the profile pictures of your blog’s most recent visitors, similar to “Google Friend Connect.”

Cuman Pengen Posting

Ga tahu lagi mau nulis apaan nih, sudah lama banget ya nggak posting di blog. Sambil donlot pilem, nunggu cucian kering sebelum pulang. Walau semalem juga ga tidur sama sekali, tapi ga tau juga nih kenapa belum juga mau tidur. Habisnya agak flu, suara aja malah jadi unik gini.

Tapi nggak apa-apa deh, experience is the best teacher, halah *dijitak*

Dah dulu aja kali ya, nulis terus capek nih, biar komputernya agak enteng kerjanya, cuman muter Tak Selamanya Selingkuh Itu Indah, Arti Cinta-nya Ari Lasso via Xmplay.

Many Facebook users are victim of ongoing Mafia war

Disassociated Press, 9-26-2009

Zach Arnold

Ryan Rezinski woke up this morning to find his Facebook profile in shambles.

“Someone came in overnight  and just ransacked the whole thing.  My favorite quotes, wall posts, photo albums…all of it’s been destroyed.” Rezinski said, fighting back tears.  “I don’t understand…I didn’t do anything wrong.”

This recent attack is not an isolated incident.  Over the past year, there have been multiple reports of Facebook users’ profiles being ransacked, ultimately leaving the familiar blue & white page a shell of what it once was.

The reason behind this epidemic?  One needs to look no further than the large scale Mafia war that has broken out across the site.

At last count, over 24.5 million people on Facebook have joined the ranks of the Mafia.  One of the requirements in gaining acceptance, and in turn more power, is recruiting your friends to become part of the Mafia.  Many do accept the offer, but for the few that do not, the consequences are heartbreaking.

Lynne Wapnerson is one of those people who dealt with the consequences.  “It was 6 pm on a Friday, and I got a message saying my friend Rita was offering me a chance to join her gang.  Now, I’m just on Facebook to find old friends, maybe play some FarmVille in my free time.  I never wanted to be part of a Mafia.  So I clicked the ignore button and thought that was the end of it.  Well, on Sunday, I got another request from Rita to join her gang.  Except this time, she sent me a message telling me that she ‘couldn’t be responsible for what happened’ if I didn’t join up.  I thought she was joking, and I clicked the ignore button again.  Monday morning, I go to my profile, and everything is ruined.”  Lynne’s eyes go misty as she stares straight ahead.  “And my farm?  On FarmVille?  It was razed, completely demolished.  All my crops, my cattle, everything was either dead or dying.”

Since that incident, Lynne has closed that profile and created a new one under an alias, created with the help of a government agency.

“We are taking these Mafia wars very seriously.” A spokesperson for the FBI commented.  “Ordinary people who desire to live their lives in peace should not have to deal with these aggressors.  We do have people on the inside, and are hoping to bring down the organizations within 3 years.”

Until then, though, how many more innocent people must lose their profiles?  For some, that blue & white page is their livelihood.  Notes replacing diaries; Favorite Quotes replacing the desire to have “Of all the things I lost, I miss my mind the most” tattooed across their shoulders; Friend Requests replacing…friend requests.  “Most people just want everyone to know their opinion about Fall Out Boy,” The FBI spokesperson said, “And until we bring down those Mafia organizations to cease the wars, the FBI encourages people to continue posting and updating their profiles.  There is an end in sight.”

If you or anyone you know has either been involved in the Mafia war, or has been attempted to be recruited, please contact the nearest FBI agency in your area.

The newest Google's hot potato

The last version of Google Toolbar includes a new tool called Sidewiki which could be a hot potato.

Sidewiki is a lateral bar which appears on your browser after installing Google Toolbar. This tool lets you comment about the website or content that you are viewing and also know what other people think about it. Very similar to Facebook’s wall.

But this tool could be a headache for Google and other websites because the author or owner from the website and content couldn’t regulate the comments on Sidewiky and this could start battles on courts.

Out of every expectation Sidewiki is incompatible with Chorme and is only available for Internet Explorer and Mozilla FireFox.

If you want to try Sidewiki follow this link.

Facebook Fans are real fans

We have had quite a bit of success with Our Library Facebook Page both in terms of number of Fans and amount of interaction.

Despite the promises of Web 2.0, it turns out that few people actually comment on Library blogs, and my sense is that most Library Facebook pages get very little interaction. So I have been pleasantly surprised that our Facebook page has been attracting a fair amount of interaction lately, and I have some thoughts on what is working.

Some numbers:

  1. This past week (September 18-September 24; which is 1st week of school here), we have had 35 Interactions (27 Likes, 9 Comments, & 2 Wall Posts).
  2. Our Post Quality for this past week was 3.8. Post Quality “is determined by the percentage of your fans that engage when you post content to your Page.”
  3. We are averaging about 3.5 interactions per post for the past week, and close to 2 interactions per post for the past month.

Some observations and lessons learned:

  1. Facebook Fans are real fans. The Fans of our page are truly fans of our library, and fans of libaries and books in general. Some of the most popular posts and status updates are positive quotes from patrons or general posts about how great libraries/librarians are or about the value of books and reading. One way I find positive (and sometimes negative) quotes about our library is through Twitter searches for “Stanford Library” or “Green Library”.
  2. Timing matters. Even the most clever of posts will get little interaction if it is posted early in the morning. By the time students roll out of bed and check Facebook, your post has been pushed off the first page of their newsfeed by updates from their 300 other Friends and Pages.
  3. Demography matters. Posts about college students and their childhood icons will attract attention from the students. Posts about the death of a 94 year old music legend will appeal to the older fans.
  4. You can use your Facebook page to ask for feedback … and you might even get some. If you use Facebook to advertise new services, you can get immediate feedback.

Before anyone asks it, I’ll go ahead and answer the “So what?” question. I am not suggesting that the number of Fan interactions on Facebook is, on its own, any kind of measure of a library’s worth or success. I do think Facebook interactions can be one source of feedback from our patrons. I also think that when Fans “like” something on Facebook, they are often saying “thanks for sharing, that was interesting” or “I like this thing the library is doing, or this news about the library”. Facebook interaction is one way of knowing when we are providing services and information that our patrons like.

Gara-Gara FACBOOK Istri Di Bunuh Suami

Kalimat seperti “I luv u soo much baaabyy.. I Can’t wait too see 2neit”, mungkin akan lebih cocok jika ditulis di message.

7. Jangan sekali-kali membuat profil Palsu

Linkage analysis

Quick Hits.  Tab Dump.  Breakfast Links.  Brunch Links.  And now…Linkage analysis.  Items that deserve highlighting and that I would (1) read and (2) comment on comprehensively if I had more time.

  • The media takes yet another tiny-bit-different look at professionalism on Facebook.  I think it fits into my description of the “white coat burden.“
  • Students who signed the Wisconsin Covenant are doing well in school…but will the state be ready or able to fund their educational need?
  • Or…they could have just talked to us students to figure out that the FAFSA is intimidating.
  • If you don’t like the results, change the methods.  TV ratings version.  Fun fact — the creator of the Nielsen ratings system graduated from UW-Madison and captained the men’s tennis team while he was there.
  • NY campaign finance laws are there to be manipulated…if you’re already elected.
  • If you’re the Naked Cowboy, you actually have to follow those laws.

Social Media and the Courts: CTC2009

Keynote speaker, Ari Shapiro, NPR Justice Correspondent, did a great job making the case for the use of social media like Twitter, blogs and Facebook by the courts.  You can hear for yourself how (Twitter to announce new court opinions) and why (public interest and transparency) courts should make use of these new technologies.  The video replay is already available on the CTC 2009 Blog through the NCSC CTC Conference Video Streams.

The program, The Role of Social Networking Tools for the Courts, continued the social networking topic.  The speakers, both from LexisNexis, Christine O’Clock and Travis Olson, started with the basics by defining and describing three of these new technologies, blogs, Twitter and Facebook.  But first they dealt with the why.  They cited a number of reasons: people trust the more personal word of mouth information, people are already talking about the court, awareness in order to avoid pitfalls, traditional media is being replaced by social media and engagement for the development of better relationships with the legal community and the public.

Blogs can bring new audiences for court information resulting in a better understanding of the courts by the public.  Blogs are not as static as a website and can be updated quickly and frequently and can put a more personal face on the court.  The Las Vegas Clark County blog was presented as good example of a court blog.

Twitter was described a great way to listen to the world around you.  It allows for the broadcast of real time announcements and can be used to drive awareness to other sites and tools.  They liked the way the Superior Court of Fulton County Georgia(@FultonCourtInfo) had announcements and real time information on Twitter that linked to the court blog and website.  A search for CTC tweets brought up the tweets of law librarian richards1000 who was recognized for his contributions in the legal Twitter sphere.

Facebook can present the courts perspective, discuss and listen.  New Jersey courts are on Facebook where they have links to news, photos from court events, announcements and links to Youtube videos.

The program concluded with a discussion of how social technology can be implemented for judges, court administration, PR offices and Clerks of Court.  All should make awareness and self education the first step.  It is a good practice to monitor the technolgies for discussions of court cases or issues.  Judges’ awareness allows the specific mention of the use of social media by jurors and witnesses and to develop media access policies.  In addition, court adminstration can develop internal staff use policies and create a strategic plan for outreach to increase court transparency using social media.  PR departments could add social media to the press release list.  The clerk’s office can post announcements, spotlight frequently asked questions or create a tour of the court’s work flow.

The best way to learn about these new technologies is to jump right in and sign up and see how it all works for yourself.

Facebook = Missions

You don’t have to be in another country to do missions.  I just went to a conference on missions and it drove me absolutely nuts to hear speakers talk about it is this thing that somehow is in the future; it is this thing that happens in another country; it is this thing somehow only the select few can take part in.  It bothered me.

I heard speakers say things like “one day you’re gonna know….” or “when you experience the call.”  They try to be inspiring, but there’s nothing more uninspiring that what they “can one day do in the future.”  Lame.

When it was my turn to speak to students – I asked if they all had Facebook.  Some of them had hundreds and hundreds of friends.  I told them that they didn’t have to wait till they were out of high school or out of the country.  Every time they logged onto Facebook, they entered into their mission field.  They didn’t have to wait to be called – they’re already called.  They didn’t have to go anywhere because the mission field came to them – every notification, every update can be a missions opportunity.

What do you think?

Awkward hugs and ignoring "friend requests"

I enjoy hugs and other expressions of caring for someone.  I’m just not sure I like them or know how to react to them when they come from people I barely know.  Recent Mingler guests, whom I had just met that night or once before, have taken to hugging me as they leave.  While many Mingler guests are a little tipsy by the end of the evening, these Huggers have all been sober.  There have been an alarming number of awkward “Saya holds out hand to shake but is quickly engulfed in an embrace” scenarios.  Additionally, other people with whom I have almost a non-existent relationship with are signing their emails “Love, ” and “Hugs, .”

Which leads me to “friend requests.”  I have spent a large amount of time these past couple of months ignoring or declining friend requests on Facebook and other online communities.  I don’t know the etiquette here, if I’m being protective or bitchy, but I certainly am clicking on “Ignore” a lot.

Reasons I Ignored Your Friend Request:

1. I have no idea who you are, you Friended me because of a) something in my bio or b) my pic [these requests 99% of the time come from males; I'll rant about initiating contact with someone solely based on looks in another post]

2. You are a professional contact or a family member or a friend’s parent and I don’t really want you seeing me calling my Asian friends “Egg Drop Soup” or pictures of me with someone else’s shaving cream handprints on my breasts; though if you’re reading this blog, that pretty much shreds any shroud of secrecy

3. I know you but don’t care much for you

4. I know you from seventeen years ago, we haven’t talked since, and you don’t include a personal message in your Friend Request; this just makes me feel you’re trying to win the prize for most friends

5. I know you and don’t dislike you but don’t really want you knowing the goings-on in my life

Cara Aman Ber'Facebook'.

pengaturan privasi akun facebook

I Hate Superficiality... But Please, Tell Me How Pretty I Look Today

The nice thing about living in New York City is that, no matter what you look like, every single woman will get catcalled at least once.  You could be wearing sweats and shoveling an empanada into your face.  You could be toting around your five kids and ten grandkids.  You could be heinously unattractive.  It doesn’t matter.  If you are a woman in New York City, you will get hooted at, hollered at, and hit on.  Even that girl in the photo below will get catcalled in NYC.  The creepy men of New York are wonderfully indiscriminate.

And no matter how much we disdain such boorish behavior, secretly, it’s rather flattering.  Every woman likes to get complimented, even if the source is a lazy-eyed homeless man with a pet rat and a neck tattoo.  We can rail all we want against the superficiality of the world, but there’s a glimmer of satisfaction when we’re the momentary center of some crazy man’s attention.  It’s that same esteem-boosting feeling you might get if you were asked to pose for Playboy.

Playboy Executive: “Hey, we want you to pose nude in Playboy for our ‘Professional Women of New York’ special.”

You: “Excuse me? I am insulted!” [Translation: "Hell yeah! Still got it!"]

Playboy Executive: “Why not?  Don’t you know our clientele?  This is a great opportunity for you to get your next job in hedge funds, private equity, or Congressional politics.”

You: “I can’t believe you have the gall to say that to me.  Unlike those skanks who pose for Playboy, I actually have some dignity and self-respect.  I don’t need to pose nude to rise up the corporate ladder.”  [Translation: "I would look good in Playboy. Oh yeah!  Your balance sheet can't handle my assets... ass-ets."]

Playboy Executive: “Come on.  It’s not like we’re Penthouse.”

You: “You disgust me.  Your entire existence is demeaning to women, and the bimbos you select as your centerfolds are putting feminism to shame.  I don’t know how you can sleep at night.  I just pray, pray, that one day you’ll have a daughter, and you will have to explain to her what you do for a living.  And if you have any semblance of a soul, you will feel the deepest and darkest shame in knowing that her future has been tainted by your pathetic, tasteless publication.  You want me to pose nude?  I’ll pose nude the day that you tell your daughter that you exploit women, you sick bastard.” [Translation: "I love being able to riff on this guy.  Not only do I feel super hot, but I feel so righteous as well! R-E-S-P-E-C-T."]

Playboy Executive: “Well… let me know if you ever change your mind.”

You: “Not in a million years, buster.” [Translation: "Unless I'm still single when I'm 35..."]

[A few minutes later]

Your Facebook Status: “Just got asked to pose nude in Playboy.  Haha!  I said no, of course!”

Your Twitter: “Playboy wanted me to pose nude, lol.  How gross!  I said no… Woman power!”

Your BBM Away Message: “Crazy day! Was asked to pose nude for Playboy.  They are such scumbags!”

…And so on.

Isn’t superficiality great, especially when it goes your way?  Even women without daddy issues want attention now and then.

So, the next time I am fortunate enough to be hooted at in New York, I will politely thank the greasy creep who complimented me.  Then, I’ll return the favor: I’m sure every guy wants to feel good about his cardboard home or his delivery bike.  And then he can log onto Twitter and let all his friends know that he’s still got it too.

Log Into Facebook Using Username

Log in to Facebook with Your Username Instead of Your Email Address: “

This is a very small update, but shows how Facebook is trying to make itself a more central part of people’s lives. You can now log in to the site by entering your username and password instead of your email address and password like before.

Sure, many other sites let you do this. But the more interesting part is that Facebook has been promoting usernames for months, having let people get usernames in vanity URLs earlier this year. For example, my personal profile is now at www.facebook.com/EricEldon. Now, I can log in as EricEldon. The significance, or what there is of it, is that Facebook wants you thinking about using the site on its terms, rather than, say, in terms of the Gmail or Yahoo account you’ve been logging in through in the past.

Social Networking for Business

Social networking platforms such as Facebook has captured such a large interest and momentum that it continues to grow in Australia and globally . The growth of this site has been phenomenal with a recent report by insiderfacebook claiming that for a 60 day period in early 2009 the number of US facebook users over the age of 35 has nearly doubled! It is also interesting to note that according to statistics from comScore

•Twitter had 800,000 Australian visitors in June 09, up from 13,000 in June 08 (607% increase)

•3 out of 4 Australians Visited a Social Networking Site in June

•Nearly 9 million Australians visited social networking sites in June

•Facebook led as the most visited (now more than 6 million)

•Windows Live Profile had nearly 2 million (though you don’t hear about this stat too often!)

It is quite evident that social networking is a tool that can be utilised by business. I recently heard a presentation by Charis Palmer from the Online Banking Review. This presentation went into discussion about the use of social networking sites by employees within an organisation and the possible threats that this poses including issues of identity fraud. I know that this is a very real reality and that criminals utilise social networking sites to obtain further information on potential victims. There was also a very important and relevant discussion around the use of policy regarding social networking site use. I believe as did Charis Palmer that there needs to be a greater development of policies in a way that employees are better educated and prepared when posting information. There was also further discussion regarding best practices for how these policies should be developed and presented to employees.

The main focus of the presentation by Charis Palmer was focusing on internal employees using external social networking platforms and the potential issues that may arise. There also needs to be some thought given to the use of web 2.0 applications internally within an organisation. Such platforms as Wikipedia that are open source have the potential to provide amazing benefits.

There is however, a great uptake of Web 2.0 not only by business but also by government. Most politicians are utilising Web 2.0 as another method for communicating with the voting public. Also a blog post by Charis Palmer discusses Australian Banks and that they are utilising Web 2.0 applicaitons.

I encourage you to visit Charis Palmer’s site and would be interested to hear your thoughts on the use of Web 2.0 within business and where you have seen a successful implemenation of it.

Pay $100 for Facebook Hack

Meanwhile:

‘A lawsuit filed by administrators at an Illinois beauty school may set a precedent regarding so-called “suck sites,” the Chicago Tribune reports. Nicholas Blacconiere, a student at the Salon Professional Academy of Elgin, welcomed classmates to criticize teachers on a Facebook page. After students posted accusations of teacher incompetence and promiscuity, administrators claimed emotional damage and filed suit for $50,000.

‘”Suck site” challenges have met with mixed success so far, and there hasn’t yet been a landmark school-vs.-student online defamation case. One expert says that while students like Blacconiere should be allowed self-expression, there are limits: If they “get online and defame and destroy the reputation of someone else, or basically inflict severe emotional distress, yep, they can be held libel.” —Wesley Oliver Source: Chicago Tribune

Soon I will be leaving the company that has been my home for two years and nine months. The idea of leaving has been giving me nightmares, but I know this is what I really want.

When I first joined the company, I was an idealistic neophyte who believed that as long as I was doing my job, no problems would arise. I was happy with the company, and it became a second home for me. I gained friends and even won their respect and loyalty. I developed feelings for someone who turned out to be a womanizer (the feeling lasted for only one month), and now he is my ka tropa. I fell seriously for an IT guy with a wide forehead (who just got promoted recently), and now we are kind of “MU” (mutual understanding) after two years of waiting. And I was able to save enough money for some of my future plans.

Months passed. New people were hired, and trained. Some old co-workers got promoted and some left for reasons I could not comprehend at first.

Then it suddenly dawned on me that something was wrong with the situation. There were nice people who got promoted and began sprouting horns on their heads. There were others who were already bad even before they were hired and they were spreading discontent and havoc.

I saw a couple of my fellow workers crying because a monster of a manager had screamed at them. Even as tears continued to flow from their swollen eyes, they were still checking documents and searching for errors, no matter how hard it was to focus on the computer screen.

I saw my pregnant friend crying because a satanic manager was cursing her online. Another friend was humiliated by a moody manager when she filed for a leave of absence.

I reacted violently when the company decided to increase our salaries based on our rating system. A nice manager had given a neophyte a grade of 4+ (even if he was still committing a lot of errors) while another manager gave an experienced worker a grade of 2 (even though she was one of the best employees). The neophyte received a P1,700 salary increase and the latter got a P300 increase. Was that fair?

I learned that when somebody got promoted, it meant he had stepped on someone else, like crabs in a basket. I also learned that an employee is only an employee, and no matter how long he has been in the company and how hard he has been working, he still remains just an employee—without a voice, without the right to talk or to question things, and with the duty to follow and act dumb.

I am not saying this because I feel bitter. Bitter over what? Because I have never been promoted even if I have put all my energies into my work? Because I sacrificed time for my family so I could render overtime work in compliance with orders of my superiors? When my mom died in a hospital, I didn’t know about it until my shift was over because we were not allowed to bring cell phones into the work area.

It is every worker’s dream to be promoted because it means receiving a salary higher as well as some perks and privileges. But in this company, I cannot even dream of being promoted because that won’t change anything. Instead it will give the people above you another excuse to bully you.

I know that I am sounding like a spoiled brat, sulking over things I cannot have. But sometimes you need to act like a brat so that you will get what you really want. And now all I want is a work place that will be a true second home for me.

So, I had this plan of leaving, and a plan to find a replacement. Then I told my boss that I was quitting.

Two of the best managers of our department talked to me and told me they were happy with my decision. They understood and they knew how I felt. They seemed actually to share my relief as I was telling them about my decision.

Friends are asking me what made me quit. I tell them there is life after work, and that I need my life back. I need to slow down and assess my life and feel free for a while. And my only regret is that I didn’t do it earlier. I’m not running from the things that make me apply excessive eye liner and eye shadow to express my anger, I just want to clear my mind and know who I really am.

Now I realize that working hard is not enough to make one happy on the job. Some things aren’t good as what we want to be. I know that by leaving, I can learn things other than what I know now. I am not dumb, and I don’t want to be forever following black witches’ orders.

I used to be a kind, soft-spoken girl with an understanding heart, but now I am completely the opposite. I came to the point of looking at life as if it’s a curse. I don’t want myself to continue hating life.

I want the old me but I want to bring with me the things I learned. This place has made me strong. It taught me to be thankful for living a simple life, simple yet happy. It also made me realize that I miss my family and friends.

My father told me that I should look for a new job where I can be happy and which will not take me far from them. He reminded me that they had taught me and my siblings to believe that simplicity spells happiness. Who am I to disagree?

When I go, I will be leaving behind the people who have been nice to me. But this is a small world and I know we will bump into each other again and again. And there is Facebook and Friendster to help us stay in touch. As for the IT guy, he will still be there, texting me every night.

HomeFur-ever Animal Rescue Suffers Huge Loss from Robbery; Ability to Help Animals Currently Hindered!

You never think it can happen to you – unfortunately, HomeFur-ever Animal Rescue is proof that it can happen to anyone; even those who dedicate their lives to doing good works!  We were robbed!  Yes, you read that correctly.  HomeFur-ever Animal Rescue was victimized by thieves this week who stole our donated van and trailer and everything contained within.

On the postive side, they abandoned our vehicle and trailer after removing almost every single thing contained inside.  A city-contracted towing company retrieved it, and we were eventually notified by police that we could claim the vehicle.  We are hopeful that vehicle damages sustained in the theft will be covered by insurance – we sure could use that bit of luck!

Unfortunately, luck is not on our side when it comes to the contents of the vehicles.  All we were left with were a few small crates (unfortunately, most of our dogs are large).  So now we’re in a quandry – do we cancel our participation in Saturday’s adoption event because we have nothing with which to transport our animals safely, or do we appeal to the community to assist us short-term and then develop strategies to help us obtain donations to replace all our stolen items (which, by the way, was pretty much everything we own – we don’t have a building; that van and trailer serve as our permanent storage).

We’ve decided to appeal to the community for help and try to re-group as quickly as possible.  Our dogs need us to keep moving forward as quickly as we can!  They need new homes!  But in the meantime, they also need fed, medicated, groomed, etc.  So we’ve all jumped into action and all of our volunteers are making extra efforts to get the word out and help us get back on track.

We’re starting to see some results.  So far, we’ve had TV coverage on two stations in Detroit. Click HERE to view our coverage; we’ll keep adding to it if we obtain more so feel free to check back.   We also posted our News Release on Twitter and Facebook; it’s getting re-tweeted and shared ALOT, so we’re hoping that will start to generate some donation activity. (By the way, if you would like to join us on Twitter and Facebook, our sites are located at:  http://www.twitter.com/homefurever and http://profile.to/homefurever).  Our volunteer marketing firm, Strategic Growth Concepts, will also be placing information about our dilemma on LinkedIN.

We hope you’ll send good thoughts our way as we work to recover from this setback and keep moving forward to help our animals.  If you are motivated to make a contribution, you may do so by clicking HERE.

Memories of the King of Pop

I was afraid to write about Michael Jackson right after he died, because so many people were doing it to the point that facebook and twitter shut down.  And I just didn’t know what to say.  I was so shocked by the news I didn’t even know what to think.  Then the rumours about his death started to fly around and I decided to wait until I knew something better, because I wanted to write something that shows something meaninful without sounding like I was part of the frenzy which I’m probably still part of.

Well basically I was raised on Michael Jackson.  My brother didn’t really want to listen to anyone else.  We have the moonwalker vid and everything.  I liked Michael Jackson, but I don’t think I was exactly crazy about him even though I did think he was awesome, but he was an important part of my childhood.  But I remember trying to do the lean from smooth criminal a lot, unsuccessfully.   When I see videos like Leave Me Alone and Jam, smooth criminal, bad, and remember the time or anything from Moonwalker, remember that rabbit?,  they remind me of my childhood which I think was a good one so they make me happy to see.  Sure I was born in ‘87, the year Bad came out, but that was the music played in my house for some years later.  I remember watching Leave me alone and not knowing who Elizabeth Taylor was or that she was in the video.  And the dog in the vid was similar to dogs that seemed popular in the late 80s and early 90s.  And the things at the gate at :58 remind me of the hamburger helper glove.  In general the whole kookiness of the video reminds me of my childhood, like the jumbled up and sporadic memories of children.

I was one of those people that started listening to music of my own in high school, but especially in college.  It was then that I rediscovered MJ.  This time I appreciated the excellence of his music and performances and watched the videos because they were good and interesting, not just because it was something on at my house.

And in college I had friends who totally obessessed over him like he was a new fad or something.  One did thriller all the time and one wanted to film a scene from bad and have everyone dress up as Michael through his different phrases, because we were all of different backgrounds .  And they even drew pictures of him and posted it in public and watched too many videos.  One time I had a three hour one and they watched it until they had headaches.  And on the end of that tape, because it was old, was when Michael released stranger in moscow, which I found to be one of his best whether or not it was popular didn’t matter. I think the song is absolutely amazing, but I think that like Leave Me Alone was too true to life for people to want to listen to.   Oh and how he came in on a jet pack for a concert for his dangerous tour that was the craziest and best thing I’ve seen an artist do to date.   I think it was then that I fell into the Michael Jackson craze.  I found Earth Song and scream, watched those crazy little pop up music vids, and just started listening to his music alot.

And it helped that I went to William and Mary and joined the group of 242 to beat the record of thriller.  I think the senior class was all crazy about him.  Where ever the class prez went thriller was played.  I was once walking to see a friend and had to pass a whole bunch of people doing thriller.  It was great.

Then not too long after I graduated Michael Jackson died.  Then everyone suddenly loved him when only a little while before they kept calling him a child molester and crazy.  Suddenly hundreds of people gathered to do thriller to pay tribute to the king.  People wanted to walk around with one glove and do the moonwalk again.

I find it sad that Michael who was such a part of my childhood died so soon after I became a legitimate adult.   And that his death was treated with such a fiasco.

For someone who as a child didn’t have a childhood he contributed greatly to the childhoods of millions of children.

Sharing Emails Via Social Networks

A third of Internet users visit social networking sites at least monthly, and 40 percent of email users visit social sites to gather product information and recommendations, according to a new study by Silverpop.

The study “Emails Gone Viral: Measuring ‘Share-to-Social’ Performance,” found that shared emails delivered an average increase in reach of 24.3 percent and this is set to increase as sharing becomes more mainstream.  On average, social sharing leads to an additional 1 percent of opens.

The majority of opens and clicks of shared emails took place in the first couple of days following posting on a social site. On average, the last click on shared emails occurs about seven days after the initial share, with activity ranging from 1 to 44 days. [read]

Facebook imitating Twitter?

With Twitter gaining more popularity and in the fear of users losing interest in Facebook, the social networking site Facebook seems to be updating itself to look a lot more like Twitter.

On Facebook friends have to mutually agree to let each other check out their online profiles, whereas Twitter lets people share updates and links with anyone who cares to read them. This feature has turned Twitter into a tool for people to peer into the collective mind and see what people are talking about in real time.

Now Facebook seems to be very interested in those features. Since last fall, when Facebook tried and failed to acquire Twitter, it has been slowly trying to imitate Twitter by introducing similar features.

Last week, Facebook added two new, Twitter-like features. Users can now “tag” friends or companies that they mention in status updates, and they can use a the lighter version called Facebook Lite that resembles Twitter’s stream of status updates.

To tag another Facebook member in a status update, users type the @ symbol before the friend’s name. The @ symbol is a convention that Twitter users started.

Facebook has long allowed people to tag friends in pictures, but until now, not in status updates. When people are tagged, they get notified by e-mail, the update appears on their profile pages and their names are hyperlinked to their pages.

Mr. Huang, who developed the new tagging feature, said it would enable users “to talk about their real-world connections” and “interact with each other more.”

It will also enable people and businesses to monitor what others are saying about them on the site, which was previously much harder to do. That has been one of Twitter’s vital selling points to businesses.

Top Five Proven Social Media Strategies

1) Facebook: Most entrepreneurs find that their best source of clients are from within their sphere of influence; family, friends, former colleagues, neighbors, previous classmates, etc.  The best way to stay connected with a lot of people who ordinarily might have lost touch, is by utilizing Facebook.  A personal profile page is a great way to occasionally remind your connections what type of business you are in.  By posting links, videos, status updates and photos, it’s very likely to remind someone you know of what types of products and services you have to offer.

2) Twitter: Twitter’s growth has exploded over the last year and is a powerful tool which can’t be ignored. Use Twitter to release information about your products or services, or simply engage in industry discussions. Other advantages to using Twitter include finding joint venture partners, interaction with prospective customers, and obtaining feedback from current clients.  Twitter is a way to make yourself available to the community to answer questions and provide valuable information in a way that establishes credibility and reinforces integrity.

3) Blogging: Maintaining a blog is one of the most important strategies for branding success.  Having a blog is equally as important as reading and researching the blogs within your industry.  Interact by commenting and leaving links back to your own blog.   Offer relevant and pertinent information, but never spam.

4) Bookmarking Sites: Popular bookmarking sites include Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious, and Digg. These sites are great for syndicating your online content and encouraging traffic to your site. For the best success, don’t simply submit and vote for your own blog posts  and articles– get involved in the community by submitting the content of others, participating in the forums and establishing yourself as a thought leader.

5)  Video: The old saying still rings true, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”  What this means is that video can illustrate your company in a way which is difficult to convey with the written word alone.  Potential clients have the opportunity to connect with your company and feel more familiar (comfortable). This is a much more powerful marketing strategy than any blog post, photo, or copy from a Web site.
