Coming of Age – Generation Next

5/13/08

Have you ever woken up and come to the realization that your generation is, well just is? For the last month I have been more perceptive to my online and television surroundings and have come to find that Generation Next is all over the place. We have become of age, many of us our in our late twenties early thirties. We are no longer the Next Generation but the Now Generation. In a 2005 article Newsweek called us baby boomers with MBA’s.

Growing up we saw older generations taking charge in politics, broadcast & cable news, entertainment and so on. However, with today’s growing age of cheap and shelf producing web entertainment, Generation Next Now has over come any ageism and created a new world of media.

The creation of podcast, blogs and vlogs has provided our generation an outlet that other generations at our age were never able to experience. After the start-up debacle you would have thought our generation would have stepped away from the information technology highway and walked down the road of safe and secure corporate America, like our parents and their parent before them. Not our generation, instead we stopped reassessed and tried again; we shall not be beaten or discouraged.

Self expression has seemed to follow our generation since childhood. Different styles, different views and a wide verity of ideas pouring from us. Instead of waiting until we grew up, we begin to express ourselves like our parents had in the 60’s. Our roll models were those who stood up for what they believed in, they protested the Vietnam War, they volunteered for political candidates and created a decade that will always be remembered. As the children of baby boomer’s it seems we are following in our parents footsteps.

With the war in the Middle East (Vietnam), the increasing gas prices (70’s gas crises) and job opportunities scarce, Generation Now has found a way to create and maintain their own road to success.  The creation of new job titles, becoming a consultant right out of college, contributing commentators on cable news and CEOs of online companies is the world Generation Now has created for themselves. As our parents sit in their corporate offices amazed by the generation proceeding Generation X, the baby boomers second set of children seem to be making their way in the world.

What will come next for Generation Now? With the increase popularity of vlogs, webtv, online business opportunities and the continue growth and determination of the generation, anything could happen. Generation Now has proven to be fighters and survivors in a world of countless change. With the creations of Napster, Myspace, Facebook and youtube this generation will continue to amaze and bring to light new media outlets that will not just entertain but possibly change the world of politics, higher education and countless avenues that haven’t even been discovered yet.
